Description

Finely hand-carved hardwood casket produced in the renowned woodworking center of Nagina, Uttar Pradesh. The rectangular box is decorated on all sides with dense floral and foliate scrollwork framed by geometric borders, a characteristic decorative vocabulary associated with Nagina workshops during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Originally intended as a jewelry, trinket, or writing box, examples of this type were prized for the precision of their relief carving and the exceptional craftsmanship of Nagina’s specialist woodcarvers. The dark polished surface further accentuates the intricate carving and reflects the region’s long tradition of ebony and ebony-stained hardwood work.  

Condition

Very good antique condition. Light, expected wear consistent with age and use, with minor surface rubbing and small abrasions. The carving remains crisp and well preserved, and the box displays attractively.

Acquired through the UK art trade, 2000s; thereafter in private collection, NY.
