Description

This chromolithograph presents two complementary scenes illustrating Indian ceremonial life and traditional attire. The upper register depicts a religious or ceremonial procession, with attendants carrying a richly decorated palanquin beneath a canopy while musicians sound long ceremonial trumpets and other participants carry ritual objects, evoking the pageantry of a formal procession. The lower register assembles men and women in a variety of regional costumes, including musicians, pilgrims, laborers, and devotees, highlighting the diversity of dress, occupations, and social roles across India. Together, the two registers reflect the nineteenth-century European fascination with documenting the customs, ceremonies, and peoples of the Indian subcontinent.

Condition

Very good condition. The sheet is clean and well preserved with strong, vibrant original hand-coloring. Light, even age toning is present, most noticeable in the margins. A few minor spots of foxing and scattered handling marks are visible, along with faint surface soiling consistent with age.
