Description

A finely executed studio portrait by the celebrated photographic firm of Raja Deen Dayal & Sons depicting two European gentlemen posed in an elaborately furnished studio. The standing figure wears a white tropical lounge suit with a high-collared shirt typical of British colonial dress, while the seated gentleman is dressed in a light-colored three-piece suit with high-button shoes. Their attire is characteristic of the Edwardian period, supporting a date of circa 1900–1905, and suggest members of the British civil, commercial, or professional community residing in colonial India.

The photograph bears the printed imprint of Raja Deen Dayal & Sons, together with the firm’s Royal Warrant and the dual studio locations of Bombay and Secunderabad, consistent with the firm’s mature early twentieth-century production. Widely regarded as India’s premier commercial photographic studio, Raja Deen Dayal & Sons served Indian royalty, British officials, and members of the colonial elite. Although the studio produced thousands of photographs, comparatively few original cabinet card portraits have survived intact, making well-preserved examples increasingly desirable to collectors of colonial Indian photography. The firm’s portraits are especially admired for their technical precision, refined lighting, and exceptional print quality.

Condition

Very good overall condition. Albumen print with strong tonal range and sharp detail. Mount shows light age toning, minor edge and corner wear, and slight surface handling consistent with age. A clean, well-preserved example.
