Description

The upper register illustrates a richly ornamented wedding or state procession with a palanquin (palki or palanquin) borne by attendants, accompanied by musicians and retainers. The lower register shows performers, including a female dancer (identified in the accompanying French text as a devadāsī or bayadère), together with musicians playing traditional instruments. Issued with trilingual headings (“India,” “Inde,” “Indien”) and an explanatory French text on the verso discussing transport, music, and dance in India. 

Condition

Very good condition. The sheet is clean and well preserved with strong, vibrant original hand-coloring. Light, even age toning is present, most noticeable in the margins. A few minor spots of foxing and scattered handling marks are visible, along with faint surface soiling consistent with age.
