Description

Bronze award medal issued for the Calcutta International Exhibition of 1883–84, one of the most significant industrial and cultural exhibitions held in British India during the late nineteenth century. The obverse bears a crowned and draped bust of Queen Victoria, Empress of India, encircled by the inscription “CALCUTTA INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION 1883–84.” The reverse features a laurel wreath surrounding the inscription “AWARDED TO,” with the central panel left unengraved. The medal is preserved in what appears to be its original fitted presentation case lined in blue velvet. Affixed to the interior lid is a photographic portrait of the presumed recipient, adding an unusual and highly personal historical association to the piece while providing a glimpse into its early ownership.

Condition

Very good condition. The medal retains an attractive, even bronze patina with sharp relief and only light handling wear. The reverse award panel remains unengraved. The original presentation case shows expected exterior wear from age and use but remains structurally sound, with the fitted blue velvet interior well preserved. The mounted photographic portrait exhibits light age toning consistent with its period.
