Description

This late nineteenth-century French chromolithograph presents contrasting scenes of Indian life and dress. The upper register depicts the funeral procession of a Brahmin, with mourners carrying the deceased on a bamboo bier according to Hindu funerary custom. The lower register illustrates figures identified as Rajput princes, Pathans, Marathas, and a Brahmin merchant, showcasing the distinctive costumes, jewelry, and arms associated with different communities and social ranks in nineteenth-century India. Printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris after a design by Louis Llanta, the image reflects the period’s European interest in the ethnography and ceremonial traditions of South Asia.

Condition

Very good condition. The sheet is clean and well preserved with strong, vibrant original hand-coloring. Light, even age toning is present, most noticeable in the margins. A few minor spots of foxing and scattered handling marks are visible, along with faint surface soiling consistent with age.
