Description

This finely carved sandalwood box is decorated on all sides with an intricate all-over pattern of scrolling foliage and flowering vines rendered in deep relief. Produced in the celebrated carving workshops of Mysore, Karnataka, the box exemplifies the refined craftsmanship that made Mysore sandalwood carving internationally renowned during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The densely carved floral ornament reflects the region’s long tradition of decorative woodcarving, in which highly fragrant sandalwood was transformed into luxury objects for princely patrons, the tourist trade, and international exhibitions. Elegant in both design and execution, the box is a fine example of Mysore’s distinctive carving tradition.

Condition

Very good antique condition. The carving remains crisp and well preserved with a rich, mellow patina acquired through age and handling. Minor surface wear, scattered small chips and losses to a few projecting elements of the carving, and light rubbing consistent with age and use. The lock escutcheon is present. Overall, an attractive and well-preserved example of early twentieth-century Mysore sandalwood carving.
