Description

This finely crafted octagonal side table is characteristic of the brass-inlaid furniture produced in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Constructed of rosewood, the table is embellished with dense geometric brass inlay across the octagonal top, apron, and tapering legs, punctuated by stylized floral motifs. The arched leg openings and restrained geometric ornament reflect the fusion of traditional Punjabi craftsmanship with designs developed for the colonial export market. Furniture of this type was produced in Hoshiarpur workshops renowned for their exceptional precision in brass-wire and brass-sheet inlay, making these tables among the most recognizable examples of North Indian decorative arts.

Condition

Overall good antique condition with expected wear consistent with age and use. Minor surface abrasions, scattered scratches, and oxidation to the brass inlay. Light wear to edges and corners, with minor shrinkage to the wood and small losses or imperfections to the inlay typical of antique Hoshiarpur furniture. Structurally sound and presents well.
